Frequently Asked Questions

How old must my pet be?

All pets must be at least 8 weeks of age to be transported with SafePet Transport.

What kind of paperwork does my pet need to travel?

A valid health certificate issued by a doctor of veterinary medicine dated within 10 days of transport must be obtained and travel with the pet. We recommend the 30-day health certificate.

A current rabies vaccination certificate must travel with your pet (this applies to pets over 16 weeks of age). SafePet Transport must have a copy of the shot records. Please do not send the original.  SafePet Transport will keep the copy for our records.

How do I prepare my pet for long travel?

It is a good idea to acclimate your pet to their traveling crate.  Feeding or placing treats in the crate is a good way to start.  You can then progress to leaving your pet in the crate for short periods of time while you are out.  This will help ease separation anxiety.  They will associate the crate with something positive and it will become a place of comfort and security for them.  Your Coordinator will discuss this with you.

What should I send with my pet?

Food: We require a supply of food to be sent with your pet, appropriate to the number of days traveled. We will supply bottled water, ice, and all bedding. Due to limited space in our vehicle, SafePet Transport cannot take other objects, but the owner is encouraged to include a toy or blanket to make your pet more comfortable.  Please label with Pet's name.

Collars, harnesses, and leashes:  Every dog has to have a collar or harness. SafePet Transport will have leashes appropriate to your dog's needs, but feel free to provide your own as well.

  • Identification Tags: Pet’s name, your name, and phone number.

  • Medicines:  Daily medical regimen to be predetermined as per veterinarian.

How do cats get access to the litter box?

Cats crates are large enough to contain both bedding and food at the same time.  At various points throughout the day, the food will be replaced with the litter box.  Cats are not “exercised” unless requested by the owner.

What if I need to reschedule?

In the event that you find yourself needing to reschedule your pet’s transport within 7 days of pick up day, you will be charged a rescheduling fee of 10% of the total agreed cost.  It is important that you notify us immediately upon your change of plans.

*The pet(s) must be available at pick up at the agreed upon dates and times. If the pick-up person does not have the pet(s) available at pick up, SafePet Transport and the owner will have to reschedule with a 10% surcharge, plus associated costs already incurred. Cancellations in such cases are not refundable.

Should your pet(s) require medical attention during transport, SafePet Transport is authorized to provide such care as is deemed necessary. Should emergency care be necessary, SafePet Transport will make every effort to contact you prior to taking any emergency action.  However, if you cannot be reached SafePet Transport will use its discretion to take such steps necessary to ensure the well-being of your pet(s).  All charges incurred for veterinary care will be the responsibility of the pet owner.

For the safety of our clients and their pets, SafePet Transport will not transport a vicious animal.  All pets must be socialized and friendly.  All pets must be lead trained and we recommend that each pet have a microchip (available from your veterinarian).
